| Riassunto: | Career inequalities between men and women in the higher professions literature has shown the conformity of the marital and parental models of the majority of managers of both sexes and has highlighted how, for men, being heterosexual, married with (many) children is a career advantage. At the French Ministry of Culture, however, there are frequent deviations from these norms of conjugality, parenthood and sexual orientation. This article therefore examines the gendered effects of these deviations from the heterosexual reproductive conjugal norm on the careers of senior managers in cultural administration. These deviations seem able to be transformed into career advantages exclusively for men. Unlike in other professional sectors, not having children, being gay or divorced does not restrain these men from having successful upwardly mobile and remunerative careers. The intersection of different marital and family norms present in the cultural sector and senior administration sector would therefore allow for the integration of alternative models of masculinity into upwardly mobile careers without, however, alleviating the burden of gender on female careers, which are subject to costs, particularly in situations of single parenthood following separation. |
