| Sumari: | This article analyses the impact of local work configurations of public garbage collectors and sweepers, who are responsible for cleaning predominantly middle and upper class neighborhoods in Paris and its inner suburbs. Agents can positively appropriate this type of space, satisfy aspirations and access certain resources, due to a work situation deemed advantageous and relationships with dominants whom they do not always perceive as such. But working in bourgeois terrain also exposes agents to relations of domination and promotes the maintenance of social boundaries. These two trends, motivated by contradictory professional and spatial socializations, conceal unequal degrees of (dis)contentment, types of appropriation, and modes of defence which are organized differently depending on the situations experienced and the trajectory of the respondents. The ethnography of the relationship between these public workers and the space of certain fractions of the dominant classes makes it possible to specify the modalities of the opening of modest but stable popular fractions to the “outside world”, particularly due to the increasingly service based nature of their work. |
