Résumé:The film M. Butterfly features a character inspired by an intriguing archetype of womanhood, one constructed in the West over the course of almost a century. The persistence of this figure raises important questions. A brief genealogy of this character, coupled with various analyses of the film, shed light on how certain popular stories circulate, shaping our representations of gender as social constructions. The essay focuses on the construction of M. Butterfly as a public fantasy and the director’s cinematic critique of this fantasy. It also aims to show how the intersectional concept of gender is not only rendered visible in the narrative but also in the film’s staging.
