| الملخص: | A particular branch of future studies, called collapsology, is developing worldwide. It deals with the likelihood of societal collapse due to climate change, pandemics, and similar catastrophes. While those who consider themselves realists stress that societies must make immediate changes to socio-ecological systems to make them more resilient and prevent catastrophic consequences, utopians believe that we can continue to live as we do today. But there are also people who find particular pleasure in imagining the end of the world. Such is the case of religious groups that pray for the Second Coming of Christ. The psychoanalytic concept of sublimation can help us to understand how people try to reduce the unacceptable urges to self-destruct, at a time when the risks of catastrophes that could bring about the end of the world are increasing. The question arises as to whether religion today is better than science and art at sublimating these unacceptable impulses. |
