| Résumé: | This article explores the specificities of social intervention with single mothers with children in emergency shelters. It is based on a qualitative survey conducted between March and June 2021 in emergency accommodation facilities and social hotels managed by Samusocial of Paris. The study shows how specific gender and intercultural social relations impact social intervention and the implementation of social policies. Social intervention in emergency shelters is more specifically aimed at helping households access so-called “independent” housing, which is conditioned by multiple criteria, both objective (legal status, sufficient resources, professional activity, etc.) and more implicit, related to the acquisition of a set of skills and attitudes (budget management, respect for neighbours, daily life organisation with children, etc.) However, the social support offered by social workers to single-parent households covers various and contradictory gender registers. They can be interpreted sometimes in terms of reproduction of traditional gender roles, sometimes in terms of gender emancipation. |
