| Summary: | This article studies how men come to accuse their spouse of having married them in order to gain French nationality and how they use this denunciation of a fake union. In the course of a master and a PhD in sociology, six men, who claim to have been victim of a “grey union” and who have all been accused of violence by their partner, were interviewed between 2018 and 2020. They all intend to show to the different agents they face that their spouse is a bad spouse, who doesn’t repaye her migratory debt, but also that she is a bad immigrant, who came to France to profit from the French State, to which the interviewees self-identify. The spouse finds herself included in the public issue of “forced” migration and the ties she maintains with her family and her native country become proof of this fraudulent union, which harms both husband and France.Through this, interviewees wish to gain state support in their various procedures, in order to cancel the marriage, expel their spouse, but also to counter the domestic violence charges against them. |
