| Sumari: | Based on qualitative research conducted between 2012 and 2019 with French-Post-Soviet couples living in France, this article addresses the intersecting consequences of migratory experience and transnational conjugality on gender. By migrating and developing an intimate relationship with their French partner, these women, originally from a former Soviet Union country, shift between gender regimes. Drawing on their surprises, disappointments, or satisfactions regarding the transformations that occurred during their migration and in their conjugal experiences, this article shows how mobility from one nation to another impacts gender and conjugality. Some accounts of intimate interactions reveal discrepancies and misunderstandings between partners, as they do not share the same norms and practical rules concerning gender. Beyond these interactional accidents emerges a loosening of gendered expectations regarding what it means to be a man or a woman, highlighting the leeway and freedom offered by transnational conjugality and the migratory experience. |
