| Résumé: | Based on an ethnography carried out between 2017 and 2023 in France and Germany, this article looks at the difficulties that asylum seekers have in getting into relationships, even though conjugality is one of the main resources available for coping with the devaluation of masculinity inherent to the asylum process. It first looks at the resources that conjugality provides to asylum seekers, even if the procedure has long-term consequences on their (potential) relationships with women. Next, it explores the difficulties of projecting oneself into a conjugal life as an asylum seeker. In the end, it shows that the action capacities needed for properly “doing gender” are jeopardised by the everyday life of asylum seeking and disrupt these men’s self-esteem and self-maintenance. |
