The hypothesis put forward here is that, starting with his vocation for mathematics, which he experienced as a ’withdrawal from the world’, he went on to develop a way of thinking that restores the world of objects to its rightful place: at the same time as the subject was being abolished, it became clear that communication was taking place within things themselves. As a basis for this reading, we have made the choice of giving a number of fairly extensive extracts from Serres’s text, all drawn from the Cahiers de formation.La publication des Cahiers de formation, journal tenu par Michel Serres de 1960 à 1974, permet de saisir la genèse de sa pensée, mais aussi de rapporter celle-ci au récit qu’il donne de sa propre biographie. L’hypothèse ici proposée est qu’à partir de sa vocation pour les mathématiques, vécue comme un « retrait du monde », il travaille ensuite à élaborer une pensée qui restitue toute sa place au monde des objets : en même temps que le sujet s’abolit, il apparaît que la communication se joue à même les choses.
