Özet:This article shifts the focus from management or executive performance to that of employees in the context of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It explores the factors that impede job performance in SMEs faced with internal and external challenges. The findings reveal that hindrances commonly described in managerial literature, such as bullying, lack of organizational justice, and poor work organization, are prevalent in Cameroonian SMEs as well. Additionally, three specific hindrances were identified: irregular wages, involvement in community or clan activities, and time theft, which lead to employees showing lower levels of adaptive, contextual, and task performance within SMEs. This study highlights the importance of understanding employees’ perspectives and addressing these hindrances to enhance overall performance in SMEs.
