| Résumé: | The article focuses on the representation of the ages of female life in Francesco da Barberino’s Book of Hours, created at the beginning of the fourteenth century. It examines how this manuscript proposes a division of the ages of life into six stages, with one particular feature: the exclusive presence of female figures. This book of hours offers a unique perspective on the ages of female life, in contrast to conventional representations that were predominantly male-centric. The images are rich in symbolism, associating each stage of female life with cosmological elements (the positions of the sun and moon), specific activities, and the dress codes of the time. Barberino’s manuscript combines temporal, social, and biological concepts to describe these female ages. In summary, the analysis of the images in this book of hours reveals how Barberino uses iconography to develop a vision of the female life cycle, incorporating cosmological and religious elements while reflecting the social and biological realities of the time. |
