| Résumé: | This article traces the history of the scriptorium of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Sépulcre in Cambrai from its origins and describes its organisation at the end of the Middle Ages. Thanks to an in-depth analysis of archival documents and of manuscripts from the monastic library, the author presents the two generations of copyists active during the second half of the fifteenth century and identifies the profiles of a number of monks who were previously unknown. The contribution also discusses the organisation of work within the scriptorium and in the places devoted to writing, revealing the lively copying practices in this monastic centre at the end of the Middle Ages. The documents from the monastery show a range of features typical of a “classical” scriptorium, but with some innovative elements, specific to the culture of a time when new forms of religiosity emerged, opening the doors of the monasteries to Modernity. |
