| Résumé: | The case study of Pushkin, a national poet with distant African roots, illustrates the singular place of Russian literature since the 19th century, seen as both European and extra-European. Based on a number of literary and paratextual (critical and academic) discourses, this article presents various ways in which this biographical fact has been treated: while its integration has been subject to oscillations in Russian literary history, from an exogenous point of view it has paradoxically confirmed the poet’s Russian identity, making visible the process of Slavic racialization. As for Pushkin, in a move beyond caricatured polarity, this dreamed-of forefather would have taken his place in his personal myth, combining exoticism and autochthony. |
