First, the connection between Greek tragedy and the threne evokes a theatrical tradition bearing the hallmarks of a mourning rite once associated with the death of vegetation deities. Then, we will attempt to show that the different nuances of grief expressed by Mary in Passion plays are primarily indebted to popular manifestations of mourning. Cairn restricted access
