| Sumari: | There are striking structural and thematic correspondences between Albert Camus’ short story “La femme adultère” and Richard Ford’s novella, “Abyss”, due to the recourse in both narratives to similar structuring motifs : those of departure from a familiar space (the urban world), the journey into an unfamiliar and alien space (the desert), and the transformation of self occasioned by the encounter with this desert space. Further, in both stories the transformation of self of the female protagonist is articulated, to differing degrees of emphasis and perspective, as an act of adultery, one that carries with it the immemorial weight of transgression and punishment. |
