Résumé:Croce’s aesthetics has often been read as a philosophy of aesthetic consciousness, which presupposes a strict distinction between artist and work, between the knowing subject and artistic expression. In this vein, the work of art would be a faithful translation of the artist’s thoughts. The pages that Adorno dedicates, in his Aesthetic Theory, to Croce seem to refer to this line of interpretation. In this essay, we would like to investigate another possible reading of Croce’s reflection on art based on an aesthetics of production in order to highlight how every artistic procedure, for Croce, is essentially unstable and founded on a close engagement with materials. Between artist and work, therefore, what is at stake is not a linear relationship, but a kind of tension that art, at various levels, materialises.
