| সংক্ষিপ্ত: | Bloch’s philosophy is characterised, among other things, by its style, which cannot be abstracted
from what he has to say with it. This is to be expected in a materialist philosophy. Matter, for Bloch,
gives rise to dynamic form. In this philosophy, language is the body of thought. Bloch’s style
expresses the emphasis in his metaphysics on the unfinished, indeterminate and utopian nature of
the real which often lights up in the marginal or unexpected. Just as his ontology is an ontology of
not-yet-being, of an open-ended process of realisation, so his language is characterized by the
dominance of the subjunctive mood. In this article I argue that the materialism of this way of
thinking allows us to overcome the institutional split between rhetoric and philosophy that
characterises the history of European thought and which has alienated engagement from truth,
while the prevalence of the subjunctive points the way to a new conception of what it means to be a
speaking being in a world of creative possibility.
