Summary:The 2015 episode of political protest in Burundi has often been studied in ways that neglect the individual and local realities of the contestation, whereas mobilization is instead largely framed around the political logics of certain key political actors and activists. It is a bias also found in political protest scholarship more broadly. Building on scholarship looking at micro or bottom-up dynamics, this article looks at the relationships between activists and citizens in the 2015 events, as well as the motivations and forms of protest as seen from the citizens’ perspective.
