Cavendish’s probabilism might seem to echo some of the stances of the Royal Society on the uncertainty of knowledge in natural philosophy. However, Cavendish’s probabilism is grounded in her metaphysical conception of nature and in the ontological properties she attributes to matter, which are in stark contrast with the empirical and experimental method of the Royal Society. Cavendish’s probabilism is metaphysically grounded insofar as she claims that the probabilistic nature of any discourses in natural philosophy can be explained by and integrated into her metaphysical conception of nature. Therefore, we should be careful when using Richard Popkin’s category of “constructive or mitigated scepticism” from his History of Scepticism to label Cavendish epistemology as it has been the case sometimes in the literature on Cavendish.Pour Margaret Cavendish, la connaissance en philosophie naturelle ne peut être que probable. Ce probabilisme peut être rapproché de certaines positions défendues au sein de la Royal Society, qui soulignent l’incertitude de la connaissance dans ce domaine. Cependant, le probabilisme de Cavendish se fonde sur des positions métaphysiques, liées à sa conception de la nature et aux propriétés ontologiques qu’elle attribue à la matière, tandis qu’au sein de la Royal Society c’est la contingence des observations empiriques et des résultats expérimentaux qui y conduit. Le probabilisme de Cavendish peut être qualifié de métaphysique dans la mesure où elle revendique de pouvoir résorber la modalité épistémologique probabiliste de tout discours en philosophie naturelle dans sa conception métaphysique de la nature. Cette caractérisation doit alors inciter à une certaine prudence dans le recours à la catégorie de «scepticisme constructif ou mitigé», empruntée à l’History of scepticism de Richard Popkin, pour qualifier l’épistémologie de Cavendish, comme cela est parfois le cas dans la littérature secondaire.Cairn free access
