Beskrivelse
Summary:The Bergier Commission was tasked with researching more than twenty different topics, including Switzerland’s political attitude towards refugees from 1933 to 1945. The ambiguities of the “Grey Zone”, as described by Primo Levi, inform the analysis of Switzerland’s stance. As many researchers have written since 1917, Switzerland’s policy was highly and unnecessarily restrictive, especially against Jews. A large number of people who faced death threats were turned away at the border. The courage of a few citizens and their sense of justice, as well as the generous commitment of some significant segments of the population, somewhat mitigated the country’s official policies but did not fully counteract them. The Bergier Commission put an end to a mythologized vision of Switzerland’s past. Since 2002, new research has been launched or has already been published in order to further explore this reality.
