Sammanfattning:Thomas Mann opposed Nazism as early as the start of the 1920s. This article shows how the political conditions in Germany after 1918 led Thomas Mann to question his former positions and made him sensitive to the culture that fostered the rise of Nazism. The article examines Thomas Mann’s fight against Nazism, as it appears in his essays and lectures. It looks at the ways in which his fight against Nazism, evident in his direct political statements, also found expression in his criticism of the cultural movements that fostered the success of Nazism. The article studies the main themes of Thomas Mann’s battle against irrationalism and anti-intellectualism, which he viewed as loyal allies of Nazism and anti-Semitism, in his works as an essayist and novelist. These themes are part of the rationalist tradition whose humanism Thomas Mann believed was essential to democracy.
