Özet:In spite of its supposed neutrality during the war, Franco’s Spain saved millions of Jews who were threatened with extermination in Europe, then controlled by the Nazis: some were refugees heading towards the free world through the Peninsula; some were given diplomatic protection in their own country by Spain; some hundreds of Spaniards were repatriated to Spain. However, the treatment by the Spanish government of the Greek and French Jews discloses the ambiguity of this commitment, based on both the lack of religious or racial discrimination and the refusal of the permanent presence of Jews on Spanish soil, some 450 years after they were expelled. Therefore, the government took the following measures: the refugees were welcomed when arriving at the border, but firmly encouraged to leave Spain as soon as possible; the government temporized again and again when facing the repatriation of its protégés; a severe reduction of the number of nationals whose case could be considered a responsibility of the consulate; the major field work of the diplomats. But if the contribution of Spain to the rescue of the Jews is undisputable, Franco’s government also bears the guilt of having abandoned a number of Jewish Spaniards who could have been rescued. After the war, the Franco regime, in search of an international legitimacy, glorified its humanitarian role, building the myth of a philosemitic Franco. This article aims to deconstruct this legend.
