| Shrnutí: | Through the tragic Vél’ d’Hiv round up, this article tries to analyse how the French-speaking Swiss press, produced in a neutral country and therefore not militarily involved in the war, described the persecution and the extermination of the Jews at that time. This can be presented as exemplary of the way the Swiss press related the events of the Holocaust. This essay is based on a wide analysis of newspapers, from all political and religious factions, released in Switzerland during the war, in order to examine how the news would circulate and how it would be dealt with by these different newspapers. This research makes clear that, contrary to expectations, information about the persecution, deportations, concentration camps, slaughters, was widely reported and brought to the attention of the readers. Most Swiss newspapers not only reported the facts, but also took positions and made their protests clear, often defying press controls introduced by the federal authorities. |
