| Résumé: | For a long time, the dominant narrative in GDR literature about the past was that of anti-Fascism and resistance. The traumatic persecution that the Jews experienced during the National Socialist era was pushed to the sidelines of academic discourse. This article focuses on the work of East German authors Peter Edel, Stephan Hermlin, Bruno Apitz, Hedda Zinner, Jurek Becker, Fred Wander and Christoph Hein. In doing so, we show how the memory of the Holocaust, which was marginalized in the 1950s, began receiving more attention in literature and the performing arts in the 1970s. It was then that GDR literature, theater and film started using a wide variety of creative forms to look at topics that had been repressed. |
