Description
Résumé:The 1940 conversion of the Bernburg Hospital into a “euthanasia” centre represented a turning point in the hospital’s history. Bernburg did not in any way feature in the original plans of the “T4” killing operation. Each gas killing centre was assigned a specific and fairly well-defined role. Starting in autumn 1940, psychiatric hospitals in different geographic regions were chosen to serve as “transit centres”. Based on the hospitals’ planned “use”, the organisers of the Tiergartenstrasse 4 (“T4”) sought out closed-off building complexes that were far from inhabited areas. Infrastructure was one of the main considerations. For example, there had to be a certain number of health centres close to the future killing centre to serve as transit centres.
