Summary:Christian reactions against Jules IsaacHow did Jules Isaac, a history teacher and courageous soldier during the First World War, become the historian that we have come to know ? During the Second World War, how did this outstanding teacher, persecuted by Vichy, who was a specialist on the period 1914-1918 (he published two books on the subject in 1922 and 1923) conceive on the beginning of his book “Jesus and Israel” which was written mainly in the underground before and after the tragedy that shattered his life ? Jules Isaac was the founder of the French Amitié Judéo-chrétienne after 1945 and one of the pillars of the Seelisberg Encounter (August 1947) and he dealt with Christian reaction to his first book on the subject which was published in 1948 – the outright hostility of Daniel-Rops to the tortuous misunderstanding of Marrou. This does not mention, of course, the most persistent anti-Judaism with which no dialogue was possible. During the fifteen years prior to his death in 1963, Jules Isaac’s voice was increasingly heard, even in Rome, from the top echelons to the foundations of the Catholic world, as is evidenced by this very beautiful letter written by a man of the Christian faith.
