Through a creative use of the descent into hell pattern, Ozick makes of the shawl a floating hyphen between the two stories of the collection. The shawl becomes a powerful symbol that invites the heroine (a young mother in the first story and an aged and childless lunatic in the second) to still rebuild her identity through otherness.Cairn free access
