| Gaia: | Cynthia Ozick’s 1991 collection “The Shawl” takes the readers to an exploration into an arching void left by the Holocaust in History and within the human being. The present article proposes to investigate how the void is eventually offset by the power of imagination which is embodied by the shawl of the title. Through a creative use of the descent into hell pattern, Ozick makes of the shawl a floating hyphen between the two stories of the collection. The shawl becomes a powerful symbol that invites the heroine (a young mother in the first story and an aged and childless lunatic in the second) to still rebuild her identity through otherness. |
