Description
Résumé:The theme of the holocaust, repressed in the 1950s by the first generation of Israeli authors, discovers itself three decades later in a literature which is more oriented towards the individual than the collective. In the works of Savion Liebrecht, past master of the art of the short story, the narrative of the holocaust is reinforced by personal and family history. On the basis of a dozen short stories, we shall study the opening up of a field of psychological exploration, the perception of the character of the survivor with reference to contemporary Israeli society, and the various ways in which memory finds expression once the law of silence is broken. The boldness of the author’s engagement with her subject extends the perspective onto other conflicts, other traumas, and brings to her chosen theme a universal significance.
