| Résumé: | This paper deals with bayonet fighting and associated fighting techniques as described in the manuals between 1914 and 1917. Before the war, bayonet fighting training was influenced by a fencing mentality. But in trench combat, the techniques learned were found unpractical ; some knowledge in hand-to-hand combat was beneficial for the survival and success of a soldier on the front lines. Pamphlets published at the end of year 1917 focused on a few efficient but unsophisticated moves sustained by aggressiveness. |
