While keeping a mounted force to be used as soon as a breakthrough would be created, the cavalry had to give up horses and manpower to other arms and services while taking his share of trench combat. As dismounted combat became the norm, new weapons and tactics were adopted, and ultimately two divisions were created to fight as infantry. |
