| Résumé: | During the Restoration, the Navy, just like the other state’s institutions, has to endure an important reorganization which passes by a massive reduction of its staff. The future of the cadets in training at the special schools in Brest and Toulon is then in question. These students, although recruited and trained by the fallen emperor, also embody the future maritime elite but they are too numerous and some of them frighten by their Bonapartist commitment. The selection of those who are admitted to stay in the Service is performed through the vagaries of the Restoration. It answers to pragmatic calculations on the capacity of the students and their commitment which has to be more in the service of France than of the Emperor, with the aim of building, slowly but with commitment, a navy which will be great again. |
