Résumé:The relation between the gendarmerie and the territory is fundamental, as far as the institution is profoundly rooted in the French geographical space for the 18th century. The relations between the territory and the gendarmerie strongly influenced the force’s organization. The distribution of a squad by township entailed the versatility of the staff, creating finally a system rooted at the local level, contributing to the structure of the State in France. This model, disputed in the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century for its lack of efficiency, brings the creation of units acting in specific domains and territories whereas the institution launches a movement of professionalization, which still accelerates after 1945.However, the gendarmerie has never broken with the territory ; its most important component remains the departmental gendarmerie, a heiress of his medieval ancestor, whose daily activity takes place at the very local level.
