Resumo:For Falkenhayn, chief of the German General Staff, the Battle of Verdun aimed at the attrition then at the submission of the enemy by means of the superiority in artillery. This insufficiently matured strategic calculation showed itself false. Verdun was finally of the German side just a bloody attempt to gain the decision without the preliminary expression of rational objectives properly defined in space and time but based on philosophic prejudices and a faulty underestimate of the resources of the French enemy.
