Description
Résumé:In spite of the image of soldier-builder associated to the Roman legionary, no Latin generic name appears to indicate what we understand by military engineering today. That is why this article aims first at determining which type of Roman military realizations can be categorized up under this notion (field fortifications, bridges, roads, canals, siegecraft and campcraft and, secondly, to specify which category of troop was tasked with this activity. If there were many specialists in military construction and fieldworks, it seems however that no specific body was exclusively dedicated to this type of works and it is sometimes difficult, in studying the individuals who devote to it, to distinguish between military and civilian activity.
