Résumé:If some decorations rewarding gallantry already exist in 1914, all countries at war are led to create new ones during the conflict ; among those is the French “Croix de guerre” (War Cross) that will influence many countries. About twenty decorations were created between 1914 and 1918, making a real collection that must be analyzed on the basis of what kind of merit they reward and who receive them. Do new forms of devotion to duty appear during this war, or do these new decorations enable to honour categories of fighting men disregarded until then ? Headed by the vey symbolic French “Croix de Guerre” and the German “Eisernes Kreutz” (Iron Cross), it is a whole ensemble of awards that share the same characteristics, influencing the symbolic and social domains for a long time.
