| Tóm tắt: | In October 1940, the gendarmerie put together a personal security company for the protection of the head of state and to render honors, while the Republican Guard of Paris, which had traditionally played this role, was demilitarized and stationed in the occupied capital by virtue of the armistice agreement. Composed of gendarmes recruited and trained with the utmost rigor, this unit continued to grow, steadily gaining its autonomy to become a major unit of its own, until it was disbanded in September 1944. The guards, whether as pedestrians, motorcyclists or musicians, provided security for Marshal Pétain in Vichy or when traveling, and participated in numerous ceremonies designed to promote the new regime. |
