| Riassunto: | During the 1980s, the instruments and objectives of many central banks underwent transformation. Drawing on a study of the Belgian case, this article sheds light on a previously underexplored aspect of this turning point: The anonymization of central bankers’ interlocutors. The use of instruments based on a globalizing money market disrupts the familial modus operandi that relied on close ties between central bankers and national financial actors. The result is a new communication effort, designed to ensure that the central bank’s interventions are perceived, understood, and obeyed by financial market professionals. |
