Description
Résumé:This paper studies the effects of intra-industry trade on the business cycles synchronization in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) over the period 2000-2022. The analysis is based on a two-digit Harmonized System (HS) classification, which provides a coherent and homogeneous grouping of trade flows between countries with low trade intensity. It also uses the GMM estimator to deal with endogeneity problems. The results suggest a positive and significant relationship between intra-industry trade intensity and business cycle synchronization. Thus, policies aimed at promoting the development of sub-regional trade are likely to contribute to cycle synchronization, and to create a favorable environment for the establishment of a common currency in ECOWAS. Furthermore, the harmonization of fiscal policies will also facilitate the synchronization of business cycles through its impact on intra-branch trade.
