| Sammanfattning: | This article studies the usage of a rhetorical figure based on exaggeration and analogy with historical facts or time periods in order to shock the population into action during a political controversy: in this case the debate on nuclear weapons in the 1980s. The examples used are provided by the antinuclear movement and the reactions it prompted near the Pantex nuclear weapons production site in Northwest Texas. This article asks why and how each side in the opposition utilized historical hyperboles in this specific context. |
