| Resumo: | This article contends that the recent revival of imperialist thought in the US and the decline of political realism are related. The latter undermined self-righteousness and exceptionalism in the US during the Cold War. However, these two traditional American attributes regained legitimacy at the end of the Cold War. Furthermore, events of 9/11 secured the dominance of neo-conservatism, which in many ways runs counter to the tenets of political realism and has brought some change to the meaning of the word “exceptionalism”. There are reasons to believe that neo-imperialist thought will not disappear in the foreseeable future, thus making the current revival of the realist critique particularly significant. |
