| Résumé: | New forms of cooperative living arrangements have been developing in the United States over the past few years, in order to find alternatives to the well-known “suburban sprawl” which too often characterizes the haphazard development of American cities. Cohousing experiments are a new form of shared housing in which several self-sufficient individual homes are built around a large common house which features shared facilities. While environmental concerns (physical ecology) are important for most of these groups, their primary emphasis is on human ecology, i.e. an attempt “to overcome the alienation of modern subdivisions” and to “recreate neighborhoods with a sense of place and belonging.” |
