| Zusammenfassung: | This essay suggests that Phosphor in Dreamland by Rikki Ducornet may read as a mock attempt to confer the powerful virtues of three-dimensional images on writing. In the same way as stereoscopic photography and trompe-l’œil painting conjure up hallucinatory visions of what they represent, words are intended to be so potent as to impose on the reader the actual presence of what they refer to. However, the performative power language is striving for is denounced as a delusion by the very optical machinations it tries to emulate. In this respect, the whole text may be construed as a hoax played on representation and a declaration of independence from mimesis. |
