| Résumé: | Stanley Cavell is one of the very few renowned American thinkers who have shown interest in the cinema. Whether he studies a genre like “the comedy of remarriage” (Pursuits of Happiness) or the “melodrama of the unknown woman” (Contesting Tears), or whether he ventures on an ontological investigation (The World Viewed), the philosopher addresses issues which are central to the rest of his work : scepticism, the question of the ordinary, the possibility of thought in America. The originality of Cavell’s discourse resides in its being rooted in the classical Hollywood cinema which, according to him, constitutes one of America’s essential contributions to culture. |
