Yhteenveto:In a context of severe medical shortage and unequal access to care for populations in certain territories, GPs’ are being encouraged to practice in desertified areas. This article analyses young GPs’ perceptions of desertification in relation to medical training and their motivations for setting up practice. Despite the incentives offered by regional and local public health policies, the qualitative data gathered reveals that practising, or even setting up practice, in desertified areas where the needs for care are important, is not without professional and personal arbitrations in the eyes of the young doctors. However, behind the conventional and stereotyped rhetoric, there are a number of determining factors that open the way to possible directions, particularly in rural areas.
