| סיכום: | This historical summary looks at social protection as a composite whole, the different forms of which, which emerged and were structured before the First World War, have evolved in relation to each other, in line with changes in society and the political and economic context. The aim is to show how these forms, which are linked to issues of appropriation and definition, have become culturally established and acclimatised, to assess how they have been organised over time and to understand how and why the centre of gravity of social protection has shifted without calling into question their diversity and equal sustainability. This approach has the heuristic advantage of setting itself apart from an extensive approach to social protection, from the margins of French society to the entire population, which still dominates scientific thinking. The conditions under which the ’heart’ of French society organised its protection, in a context marked by the major crises of the 20th century, are just as enlightening as the protection from which the margins of this society have benefitted. In any event, they have helped to determine the French people’s support for, and attachment to, a protean social protection system that encompasses the entire population. |
