| Shrnutí: | This summary article, which draws on a number of personal studies, sets out to look at the different rationales at work in the construction of French social protection, going against the grain of analyses of the French welfare state based on an ’all-insurance’ approach. Drawing on old and more recent research, it looks back at two French characteristics that took shape at the turn of 19th and 20th centuries: the composite aspect of social protection, which combines different complementary organisational social insurance logics, and the existence of several levels of intervention based on the ’address for social welfare purposes’ concept, which has justified, in changing ways, the social interventionism of the commune, the départements and the nation as a whole. |
