الملخص:Italian unity owes much to Count Cavour, who worked unceasingly to unify Italy under the direction of Victor-Emmanuel II, King of Piedmont-Sardinia. This long process had the support of Napoleon III, who was a fervent champion of Nationalities. Nevertheless, the Papacy in Rome remained a central issue until 1871, matters being later resolved with the Lateran Pacts of 1929.
