Description
Résumé:Having almost entirely disappeared in the 18th century, the window decorations of the cathedral were recomposed using ancient descriptions, fragments still existing in the edifice, as well as stained glass windows from other cathedrals as a model. This program, put into place by the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in 1855, was executed between 1858 and 1865, with a view toward harmony within the building and the respect of medieval traditions, while taking into account the ideas of this period in matters of restoration. The best stained glass painters of this period participated in the restitution of this ensemble of stained glass windows, which included the representation of large figures for the upper bays, legendary stained glass for several chapels and ornamental stained glass, known as “in grisailles” for the rest of the edifice.
