Description
Résumé:The dossier of the medieval croziers found in the choir of Notre Dame de Paris during the work undertaken in 1699 for the execution of the Vow of Louis XIII warrants being reopened. As early as 1941, in his work on Limousine croziers, Jean-Joseph Marquet de Vassel-ot had catalogued two of these croziers : the first with the Annunciation that was found in the tomb of Etienne Temp-ier (1268-1279) and the second with a Saint Michael combatting the dragon, found with the remains of Denis Du Moulin (1439-1447). Both croziers had been the subject of engravings, and the copperplates are conserved in the Chalcographie du Louvre. The engravings were published in 1767 in the Description Historique et Chronologique de l’Eglise Métropolitaine de Paris, an anonymous work attributed to a certain “Charpentier, lawyer”. A new examination of the engravings in the light of available documents leads us to make some observations concerning the medieval croziers in the episcopal tombs in the cathedral and to reconsider them in the Limousin production of the 13th century.
